Bonham a toujours été reconnu comme un grand buveur, mais le 24 septembre 1980, alors qu'il sortit pour une soirée bien arrosée, il but 40 vodkas en 4 heures. Il prit un taxi pour se rendre à la maison de campagne de Page où se trouvait un ami qui l'aida à se mettre au lit. Pendant la nuit, il vomit alors qu'il était inconscient et s'étouffa.
